Create Quality Relationships
Knowing what freight to haul is very important, but more times than not, knowing who to haul freight for, is even more important. If you do not already have an established book of business that is full of enough contacts to give you all the freight options you want and more, then you better get one started now. When it comes to transporting someone else’s goods as a commercial motor carrier, you only have two options. You can haul freight directly for the shipper or manufacturer, or you can haul freight for a freight broker. When you are first starting out in trucking, you may find it easier to work with freight brokerages and their agents to help you find loads to haul. There are thousands of different brokers out there and not all of them are created equally, the same holds true for product manufacturers. You will want to make sure and do your due diligence to check out anyone that you plan on transporting for, to see that they are trustworthy and straightforward with how they operate their business. It’s very easy to dive in headfirst and run a bunch of loads and rack up a big accounts receivable. However, it’s just as easy to not get paid a dime for a single load you’ve ran. Consider the consequences before you call and offer your services to just anybody but realize that you do still have to call somebody and secure yourself some freight. So don’t be scared to work with new clients, just be smart about doing it. Keep in mind that there is always another number to call and another load that needs to be picked up. Don’t be discouraged, be diligent.
