An unidentified person stole a semitruck and crashed it into a Texas public safety office, critically injuring at least three people Friday morning, a state lawmaker said.
The “horrific tragedy” occurred at a driver’s license office in Brenham, a city nearly halfway between Austin and Houston, said State Sen. Lois Kolkhorst, who represents the area. Three people were airlifted with critical injuries, and three others were taken to local hospitals, she said.
One person was arrested, law enforcement said.
Texas Department of Public Safety officials told Kolkhorst no department employees were injured. One staff member was trapped inside the office after the crash.
“According to law enforcement, this appears to be an intentional, criminal act and the Texas Rangers will be leading the investigation,” Kolkhorst said. “This deliberate, heinous act is a reminder of the dangerous work done by our law enforcement and licensing agencies that work to provide public safety and services.”
Officials announced a news conference Friday afternoon.
